Lose rear end

So ive replaced all of the bushes in the rear, and the clunking is still there, its like a metallic sound and the whole rear end is moving left and right when im driving. Literally couldnt even drive it a mile down the road.

have you checked out the power plant frame?
Would that make the whole rear end shift when driving ?

I did have a look a minute ago and it looked fine, but i didnt look into detail, il jack it up tomorrow and have another look

It may not be the source of your issues but it will be a good place to start, cold be loose or cracked and its a pretty integral piece

+1 on the PPF, a crack can put the diff out of alignment and let it moove. Also have you checked your subframe bolts? Not heard of it on Fd's but e9x gen BWM's like to loosen their sub frame bolts occasionally

I will have another look tomorrow when i jack it up , I looked at the subframe a minute ago and all the bolts are there and there is no movements in the subframe at all, its weird, itsike i come to a stop, then i turn and pull out and u hear a massive clicking banging sound and the rear end goes wobbly and once ur straight and going its ok again. Until i i come to a stop and then turn and accelerate

Also skimming back through, did you do the rear toe arm bushes, or replace with aftermarket. They can clunk quite loud, but wouldn't make the car feel awful if it was just them.

I poly bushed the stock ones

You'd need to take the weight off and check the torque of the bolts to see, they don't get that loose lol.

But that does sound like a ppf issue, I cracked the one on my old car and had similar issues. I got it welded up and the guy didn't close the crack up (was at the top where it bolts to the diff on mine iirc) and afterwards it put the diff at an angle and the left driveshaft would hit the subframe going from 1st to reverse and 3 point turns etc.

Took a while to clock that on .... Doh ( gut that welded it was just a blacksmith guy not a propper car welder in his defence but still)

Ah ok , i will double check the subframe bolts tomorrow then too.

And will report back what i find

I don't think anyone has mentioned it yet, but could be an aftermarket differential, one with an aggressive low speed / load locking config (shimming). Do you have any issues in reverse?

No issues in reverse, but the rear wheels have always locked up real easy, even when turning at low speeds u can hear the other wheel skidding pretty much

Hopefully he does and it is just that  I was going to add, when I broke my ppf, I also toasted the stock diff in the process (doing like 3-4 propper launches with a mate 🤦‍♂️), but didn't notice when putting the replacement in...

So yeah, like everyone says, don't launch a stock diff Fd:ROFLMAO:

Any history with the car? TBH that almost sounds like it's welded?

The guy i bought it off said some old lady in japan used it for drifting, but i dont know how true that is mind.

I havent launched the car for a fair while to be honest but i have been doing longer journeys and driving it alot more this last year.

When you jack it up , get both sides up and turn on wheel, Im 99% sure if it's welded both will turn in the same direction, but that may be the same with a plated etc - someone correct me if I'm wrong.... Or pull the cover, is really the only way to be sure...

I did jack it up earlier and look and sometimes the other wheel moves the same direction and sometimes it just sits still, i do a few full rotations and the other wheel joins in when it feels like .

Really don't think that would be welded then, they'd be locked all the time.
A few mates have e36's with welded diffs, you can literally see the rear wheel/car skipping when they reverse into parking bays etc.. It's quite horrible lol, less bad moving, but it's very obvious at low speed.

There could be more than one issue, what are your suspension too mounts like? what tyes are you running? I know this sounds mad but have you checked your tyre pressures too? I once had a feeling like my back end was loose and it was the tyres i put the front on the back and back on the front to diagnose it and the snake loose feeling went away.

Took the ppf out , there is a small crack , im not sure as to if the ppf is actually twisted as ive never removed one of these before.

The noise was so bad in the car, would this little crack make that much sound ?

heres a few pics of the ppf if anyone thinks theres anything out of place please let me know.

Should i buy a good conditioncused one, or can i just have this one welded ?

thanks
