Ellz’s LsFd build

Made a start pulling the diff out today and taking some measurments
The bmw diff should bolt up to the prop and be in the correct place which is nice
Whipped the back cover off just to check it wasn’t a welded diff that someone charged me £550 for haha

current state of play is the diffs out
Having some trouble getting the shafts out of the hubs so have sprayed them with wd40 to hopefully free them up a bit

having the ramp has already paid for itself in time saved would hate to have removed the diff with the car on axle stands

Getting the shafts out wasted two evenings of hammering so took the hubs off and pressed them out at work
Took all of 5 minutes but now I can make a start on mounting the diff

How thick is your concrete for the ramp?
I used m16 anchor bolts and they themselves where 6 inches long. The manual for my ramp said minimum 10 inches, I only had about 2 lol

8” sds bit was still in concrete so I called it good and I used m16 anchors too

So I madd a plate to allow me to hang the bmw diff in the original fd diff mountings
Had to make the plate twice because I measured the fd mount hole centres 10mm wrong 😂
Hung the diff in the car today and everything clears
Annoyingly where the subframe sits currently I won’t be able to put oil in the diff so it will have to come back out

the prop bolts right up to the diff so no change will be needed there

ive made a bush to set the pinion angle just need to make some brackets to join it to the cross bar I previously made

Hard to tell from the image, but does that plate have additional mounts/supports to the 8 fixings shown? If not, it looks like it wold have a hard job resisting the twisting force applied by the propshaft. If engine torque is around 500Nm and 1st gear about 3:1, that's 1500Nm that adapter has to resist. The fixings to the rear cover also look quite small which I'm guessing is in to aluminium.

Will have to see how it copes I’ll keep an eye on it when it’s up and running and go from there
The rear bolt go through the rear plate into cast iron housing

Got the shafts built up yesterday had a nightmare trying to find a spring clip for the hub side shaft as the original had snapped
Managed to modify the diff side spring clip to suit
Threw the shafts in and tightened everything up and managed to have a drive with my new final drive ratio

night and day difference 5th gear before is now 3rd gear so drivability is greatly improved

the backbox section of the exhaust no longer fits so I’ll have to modify that but overall I’m happy

With the backbox no longer fitting I’ve ordered some stainless pipe and a cut off valve kit so I can keep the meaty sound but have it quiet for driving around and track days

see the link for the sound without the backbox it sounds lovely but I don’t wanna draw attention to myself

They do sound great without mufflers, but it's hard to understand exactly how obnoxiously loud it is without hearing it in person.

Getting on the quiet trackdays becomes a challenge after a few events. I've repacked the 2 front mufflers (a while back) and the rear (last year) and I'm still concerned about Brands Hatch GP this year. Make sure you put the largest can in the space you have if you are serious about doing trackdays.

Spent the day tidying up some bits
Got my aem filter sock fitted to hopefully protect from water getting into the intake
New rack bushes
And just checking the rear end after the first drive
Got some stainless pipe on the way to make up the new backbox section also

Burrowed some filler rod and finished off the exhaust tonight
The vent for the valve was gonna blow hot air at the inner edge of the tyre which I thought might be bad so I added some pipe cuts to aim it away

Been sneaking out to do some bits on this wired in the exhaust valve to the fuel pump relay so it isn’t a constant drain on the battery
Tidying up bits and bobs hopefully get it on the road soon once I can find a reasonable insurance company
