Rear axle wheel side assembly issues

I recently had to disassemble my rear end to get new bearings in and replace some broken studs. My main issue arose when pulling the rear hub flange assembly off the drive axle. The small joint with the ABS sensor wheel also pulled off of the axle as it was fused with rust to the flange assembly. So once this had been removed I was left with what is pictured below and a bare rear drive axle.

So I am need to mate this with the rear drive axle.

However when I'm going to re-install this part onto the drive axle it wont go on past this retaining ring at the end the of the axle.

I'm think the ring may need replacing but I'm struggling to find one listed online, or am I missing a specific technique to getting it back onto the axle? It goes on about half an inch but wont go on any further and won't come back off.

looks like that snap ring is buggered to me. measure it and get a new one. assuming its just a round standard shape you can get them easy enough.

When I took the hub assembly to get the new bearings pressed in the garage mentioned that the small section with the ABS sensor wheel shouldn't have come off of the drive axle, it just came off as it was fused with rust to the hub assembly.

With a new snap ring I'm assuming it can just be tapped on with hammer?

a snap ring will just slide over the of the axle. it will put up a fight though.

replace the snap rings then it should slice into the CV joint. put a CV boot ring on and you are done. might be worth cleaning the spline and putting some anti sieze on it before refitting.

Basically just needing to get this:

Onto this

And its just the fact the snap right is buggered thats stopping it? With a new ring I'm assuming it should go back on without too much of a fight back? I'm also aware it shouldn't have really came off in the first place but due to being fused to the hub with rust it did.

CV joints to shaft always put up a bit of a fight, on and off.

With a new ring you'll more than likely need a few taps with a decent lump hammer to get it back on - assuming you had to do that to get the CV off? - with a hammer not a puller? - edit meaning like a slide hammer. Heard of people using them on CV's for some reason.

Yep, once you have a new ring on there it will sit in the groove on the end of the driveshaft nicely (try not to stretch it too much when you put it on). The when you slide the axle in to the cv joint, the taper makes the ring compress so the shaft slides in (narf narf). Then once through, the clip expands on the other side keep the shaft in the cv.

Yeah as said, a new ring should do the trick, or you might get away with squeezing it back tidy with pliers and try again. It's funny how the cv ones are always a bastard to get back together but the diff ones fly in and out easy loads of times without any trouble and it's the same thing.

You might even be able to put it in position and work the clip in with a screwdriver then give it a clout and it should go in that way.

But be wary of doing this as it may be an absolute bitch to get back out at a later date. But if your after a quick fix...

thats all a lot of help thanks. I'll pick up some new rings and give it another go. They are being a nightmare!

A long shot but does anyone know the correct diameter for the rings, I've had a look online but can't find any reference to axle diameter. Just trying to avoid driving over to the car to measure them...

Ok so I'm still having a nightmare with this. I've tried a fair few diameter snap rings and non of them fit. They all come out of the groove in the axle and slide up the splines when reassembling.

Does anyone know of the part number for this snap ring? It seems to be a non standard thickness as all the snap rings I have tried so far are using thicker gauge wire.

Managed to find it straight away, which is just typical. Fairly universal part, part number is MAZDA G003-25-421 for anyone who needs it in future.
