Where to go for a engine rebuild?

Hi All, I’m new to the scene, I’ve recently bought an RX7, something I’ve lusted over ever since I saw them however is somewhat of a project. The car is currently undergoing some bodywork repairs, while this happens I want to find someone who can do an engine rebuild as the engine is on low compression, but I knew this when buying the car. I’m not looking for crazy horsepower but I want to know who’s the best in the business for engine rebuilds for rotary’s don’t mind where they’re located, as long as it’s UK based.

Also I will be planning to do a few mild upgrades such as cooling exhaust etc but will be running on stock turbos at the moment which I am planning to have reconditioned. Should I have the engine street ported? Does this affect the reliability of the car? Standard seals or aftermarket? Any other suggestions you could recommend?

My goal is to have an enjoyable drivable/reliable weekend car, not looking for crazy horsepower but 280/300 mark would be ideal for me, is that realistic ?

Thanks in advance look forward to your replies ! 👍🏽

There's a few places that get good reviews

Stu and Jay at rotortorque, prob the most good reviews on here. In essex
Silver fern in deeside, keep quiet on the forums but never heard anything bad about them.
Era for engine builds, pretty much all he does.
And TGS for Fab work, but don't offer rebuilds or tuning.
Rotary revs in Leeds are OK too. But they're a little less interested in FDs these days.

There are some other rotary shops about but I haven't mentioned them.

ERA at Oldones
Rotortorque

Standard Mazda seals all round except for the apex seals.

Based on your power goals, i would just go exhaust and aftermarket ecu.

Tim at RX Motors in Salisbury is good too. Kind of reminds me of the mad scientist from back to the future . Very knowledgeable and helpful.

He's recently rebuilt my engine and also Lawrence's 600+bhp Bridgeport.

As long as you don't take it to some unknown newbie outside the recommendations made in this thread I think you should be fine.

I would bin the twins as they are more hassle and ultimately will fail on you and I'd take any reconditioned twins with a pinch of salt. You will be better off with a small single turbo and it will be more reliable too. Even a cheap journal bearing T04E or T04S should be fine.

However, with the current lockdown you need to make some calls to see who can sort you out within the time frame you're looking for?

From personal experience I would NOT recommend RxMotors at Salisbury. 2 visits, 1 rebuild, 1 water seals replacement. Both disastrous, she'll never see the inside of that garage ever again

He built 2 engines for me and both popped within 5k miles. Didn’t honour the warranty on either despite the fact I had done everything he had asked.

Well I'll count myself lucky then, engines fine but the control cabling for the turbos was ripped out at Spa, when it got caught in the belt because it hadn't been replaced properly. That was the rebuild, the seal replacement along with the MOT however! £900 later getting her fit for the road again elsewhere, not including the new coilovers I bought and I still haven't replaced the splitter that he cut off the car! Oh and the MOT wasn't completed either. Rant over, that was last year and I was so irate I couldn't voice it on here without sounding like I was a psychopath

I left out the fact that when i drove it home and the car overheated on the drive as the fans didn't work.
The sump plug fell out of the gearbox as it hadn't been done up properly.
It took 4 visits to fix a boost issue which in the end, re-worx fixed. It was the circlip missing on the actuator rod. Thing was, it was immediately obvious it had not been fixed each time I picked it up from them

Countless other things, i have forgotten half of them

The engine on mine was rebuilt by RX motors 2 years ago... they didnt touch the car, only rebuild the engine.

Probably done about 5k miles on it so far....

I had vairious issues with rx motors, over heating on the journey back from a full rebuild not even a mile away from his workshop.
also parts not fitted properly or incorrectly and the list i gave of todo's not even looked at 🤨.

Also didnt help that a forum member contacted tim when he seen my car had issues on my project thread and fabricated lies to tim which caused me many of issues , so i got contacted to pick my car up asap and nearly didnt have the car repaired when it was freshly rebuilt and less road worthy then before i took it there 😂.

All issues were resolved in the end and i do daily drive the car now , just wasnt a good experience.
