Replacement Tyres

Last night I had a tyre blow out on the front right at speed, bit of a brown trouser moment for me.

So today I ordered another Nangkang NS2R 235/40/17 to replace it.

I fancy a change of tyre, the NS2R are pretty good for a budget track day tyre, my question is as someone who does not
know much about tyres what would be a step up tyre from them, car is used as a weekend toy/project with a few track days thrown in.

The wear rate on these tyres are great if anyone is thinking of them.

NS2R are awful mate. For more road ps2cup or ps4s.

For more trackday ado8r are a massive step up from those ns2r. More serious tyres would be AR1s. After that your stepping up to big money AO52s etc

I had the RSR's on my last car and have found the NS2's slightly better in the wet.

Just looking for the next step up for track days.

I didn't know the NS2;s were a budget tyre, as I said looking for recommendations on a better tyre.

Unfortunately tyre choice is probably as much of a personal one than anything else. I run Yokohama now but had a set of Avon ZX7's prior to that which I would have gone back to had they been available. You'll get similar stories from the other members I'm sure, and something good in the wet might not be as good as another tyre in the dry if your track running

you can watch YouTube reviews where they do actual lap times and wet driving tests. PS4 usually wins the test

PS4 is a good road tyre, but it isn't a consistent trackday tyre for the dry. The PSCup2(R) is a decent benchmark for a track tyre, but if you don't consider NS2Rs a budget tyre you may be in for a shock! I run RSRs as I can't justify the cost for the extra performance. Plenty of options out there these days (Dunlop, Pirelli, Avon, Yokohama etc), but you need to check size availability and what weighting you put on wet and dry performance as well as longevity.

No a recommendation, but I haven't been overly impressed with my Advan AD08R's so I'd recommend not getting them! Once warmed up they're ok, but they're not too confidence inspiring until warmed up.

I'll be going back to Toyo R1-R's when they've worn down a bit, best tyres I've ever had on an FD. Very reliable, consistent and crazy grip levels in all conditions.

After having a look around I am still not sure what to fit next, I don't mind paying
£150ish a corner for a tyre, but for every good review there is a bad review, bloody conflicting it is.

To get any meaningful advice you really need to give a priority on your requirements and what sizes you are after. There is no perfect solution, just a load of compromises.

The RSRs are similar to the NS2Rs from everything I've read. They don't offer the best dry grip level, but they can withstand track abuse quite well, are controllable on the limit and will shift standing water OK for what they are. Would never run them as a pure road tyre (I do run mine all year round on road) as they need a bit of heat to work and a decent road tyre will outperform them in the wet. Their price point is what also makes them very favourable, money no object I would be looking at the premium brands and have at least 3 different sets of tyres for the car to suit conditions.

Requirement are, car does around 4,ooo miles a year with 2-3 track days a year thrown in including a trip to the Ring.

Sizes are 235/40/17 & 255/40/17

Happy to pay around £150ish a corner, want a decent track day tyre that is road legal, dry grip a priority.

This is indicative of what is out there at what price. You won't get a year out of the more extreme tyres as they have less tread depth to start with. Makes the decision to run your part worn set to the ring and back legally in the inevitable torrential rain, that much harder. I think the AD08R is up there with the best of the road biased track tyres. After that you are over budget for the more serious grip levels (dry). DZ03G cars have appeared to have more grip than me on a dry day, but you pay a decent premium for them and I don't think they tolerate standing water that well.

Doesn't cover them all and they may be biased, but helps put the majority into an order of grip level and what to expect.

R1r are supposed to be very good but are never easy to find in 17s fd fitment. Another option is federal fz201. These are supposed to be fantastic track tyres which you can buy soft/medium/hard depending on conditions your planing on racing.

Strangely 888s are actually very affordable nowadays, i priced up a set delivered for £530.

the federals are £720 and ao52s etc are £800+

I really want the Yoko's as well.. they not worth having? my car made 383bhp yesterday btw lol not spoke to you for a while haha

Horses for courses i guess, i really rate ado8r also but apparently the new ado8rs are not so good.

Being a light trackday tyre they are not the best in the damp compared to normal road tyres.

Great work on the dyno dean you deserve a good experience after the last one. What changes have you made?

I wouldn't rate them compared to other tyres I've had personally, they're the later ones on my car. I haven't had a chance to use them on track, all road use so far. I might even remove them for some R1R's when I'm feeling a bit more flush haha.

Wow that's a great result, over 90hp up from last time! I'll have to check your build thread, nice work, you can finally enjoy it a bit .
