Recommendations on headlights

Hi all, I have been looking at the RE Amemiya lights but I’m also interested in the headlights that have a cold air duct in the high beam on right-hand side.
Anyone have experience, or recommendations? MOT legal etc.? Thanks in advance.

Yeah, don't. They are another version if re-a, and use a single foglight each side. Takes a LOT of work to fit something decent in there. And the perspex lenses you can get for them are a terrible fit.

Thanks guys - after a style that looks reasonable, and that will pass an MOT. But for track days - I'll look to changing out the right hand side headlight for a ducted (with single low beam light)

Nice - thanks, sorry I should have specified that I don't have pop-ups.
I posted that more in reference to the recent MOT law that states any LED or HID conversion is a failure. Just because you mentioned about MOT in your first post.

I thought you could run HID conversion as long as the housing is meant for HIDs? To stop people putting LEDs/xenon in non HID housings, because its hard to get the beam pattern right? Thats how I understood it anyway, might be wrong.

In an ideal world, as long as the pattern is present, you would be ok. (Nothing to read between the lines here!)

I read that in the same way as Jake, conversion of the stock Mazda unit, which is type approved for use with a halogen bulb, by using an LED or HID bulb replacement would be a failure for the MOT.

Replaing the whole light unit for a dedicated LED or HID unit such as using the Hella housing should be allowable under MOT rules.

When I researched this a long while ago, fitting LED or HIDs required use of self levellers and washers to clean the front of the light. But I note that there is no requirement for an MOT inspector to fail a vehicle that has had HIDs or LED complete units installed in replacement for Halogen units where those other things are not present. Although I believe there has been a 2016 cutoff for that included so our FD's (and my Land Rover Defender, which I'm looking at installing full LED replacements into) should be ok in respect of the MOT.

That's not to say that any changes are fully legal and I'm no lawyer ;)

That’s my understanding as well, if the light source and housing are type approved (i.e. have an E number) then it should be ok, but that could also be open to the testers interpretation!

This what the new MOT manual states “Existing halogen headlamp units should not be converted to be used with high intensity discharge (HID) or light emitting diode (LED) bulbs. If such a conversion has been done, you must fail the headlamp.”.

Also if the light output goes above a certain level (lumens) I think you’re meant to have self-levelling and washers fitted, but it’s more of an issue for HID than LED.

I wasn't sure if an MOT tester would have such equipment to test output and there are a lot of variables that could impact such as dirt etc on the lense amongst other things. My thinking was that would be for the type approval stage.

I agree, I understood for the output to be for type approval stage, with the MOT tester able to check the self levelling systems and washers, if fitted.

I seem to remember when looking into this requirement, some manufacturers fitted lower wattage HID's to get around the need for self levelling and washers. I think it was Ford with the Mustang using 25W HID lamps instead of the usual 35W.

Oh and just to be 100% clear I think the stock Re-Am light units, which utilise fog light units are totally illegal in the UK.
Interesting - but can those bulb/units themselves be changed do you know?
i.e. these ones? the lights - can they be changed?

I have a pair of those knocking around, and had a look at the mounting holes- fitting hella units might be doable but it isnt a straight bolt on fit really. Would probably be just as quick to make your own mounting system

ooo - interested in selling Marco?
