Jester's Sunburst Yellow Type R Bathurst R - '01

I broke her out of winter slumber a little earlier, the day before Storm Eunice hit, was a stellar day down in Kent, warm and dry so I took her the long way round to the gym and back. She fired up with no issues, and I am still amazed at how punchy the power feels.

I have chased up Tegiwa regarding the Ohlins, Ohlins seem to be dragging their feet a little at the moment, but Tegiwa are hoping to give me some good news next week when they have been assured the outstanding orders should be delivered.

Probably should start thinking of getting her booked in for a big service as we are knocking on the door of Spring now!

Regarding Ohlins, do you know which springs they ship with as standard ? How long have you been waiting ?

So some general updates, but nothing overly exciting yet!

After a good chat with TPS in Orpington who I've started to build a good relationship with due to them looking after my 8. The 7 is booked in for a full service middle of April which will include:

Magnecore Leads
Spark Plugs
Air Filter
Fuel Filter
Power Steering Belt
Fan Belt
Coolant
Oil + Filter
Gearbox Oil
Diff Oil
Brake Fluid

Seeing as she came with 0 service history, she will get everything and obviously anything that is found on the day.

Took her for a drive the other day, and I must admit the lack of confidence inspiring body control even on A roads is starting to grate on me. The bum sensor really doesn't enjoy how she seems to fidget over bumps and either overdamps compressions or just seems to crash. When you get on and off the power. I know these cars should feel waaaaay better and I am getting impatient for the Ohlins. Tegiwa have assured me they are part of a 2 pallet shipment that is currently clearing customs so fingers crossed it won't be too much longer.

Keen to see how you get on with the Ohlins - in a similar predicament with my handling on an old set of HSDs.

Yesterday started off in entertaining fashion when the car wouldn't start. Dash lights lit up, clutch in and she refused to turn over. Not even a squeek from the starter. Which led me to rush around and fit a new battery, no change. Started to blame the Clifford alarm as I assumed the immobilser wasn't allowing the car to start. Ran through a few checks, confirmed no warning chirps or indications from the alarm so that was working fine.

Called the AA as I had started to run out of ideas.

While waiting, I did a bit of reading online (Standard fault finding practice, Google the poop out of the issue). Where I read someone say, check the clutch in switch. So ran back to the car and bent myself into the drivers footwell and check and I found the following.....

Under the metal tab to the left of the clutch pedal is the clutch in switch, and after looking at it, I saw there was no way that tab would make contact with the switch with the clutch in. So I checked around the area and under my drivers mat I found......

The offending white plastic item sits on the white arm of the clutch switch so when you depress the clutch it activates the switch so you can start the car like so....

With it now back in place with a dab of silicon to hold it in place, I could start the car and get it to TPS in Orpington for a major service.

Work carried out:

Oil + filter.
Coolant.
Airfilter.
Gearbox + diff oils.
Spark plugs.
Stock HT leads replaced with Magnecors.
Power steering & fan belts replaced.
Fuel filter replaced.
Replaced stock catback with Racingbeat catback.

Eagle eyed people may notice no brake fluid change in that list. This is because every fluid that came out of the car was pretty much brand new, so we tested the brake fluid for water % and it was extremely low. So I spent a good chunk of money replacing good fluids, but now I have the proof and piece of mind it has all been done. The stock HT leads didn't look the best and the belts had started to fray and crack so extremely happy it has all been done.

The exhaust makes so much difference, a deeper tone with pops on the overrun, without being too intrusive at cruising speeds. It adds a bit more character to the car that it was sorely missing.

My Ohlins have been confirmed as being in the country but I am still waiting for them. I really want to get them on the car so it can be setup properly.

Sat in some aftermarket seats as there were 2 other FD's up at TPS. But noticed the biggest change for driving position was a dished wheel, so I may look at going that way once everything else has been sorted.

Can’t believe I missed this.

nice to see this car went to a good home, it’s lovely mate 👍🏻

It's an elite club of us idiots who spent probably over a hundred quid on new batteries etc before realising the fix is a £2 part from ebay 😂

mentioning no names, but I had a reputable FD specialist look at it and couldn't find the problem
Literally was a pain in the ass.

Appreciate it, she is getting put back to a good driving state as I desperately want to get out and see what she can do.

Classy JDM idiots i'll have you know. I pulled out an original Mazda badged battery, so I am going with preventative battery replacement as I don't know how old it is. Adding that spin to it!

Wouldn't happen to have the ebay link would you?

I had the same issue with my clutch... spent a lot of time and money before I found the issue... :(

Honestly stupid, as if the Series 8 had a flashing message saying "Press Clutch To Start" on the dash somewhere and we all clutched in and it didn't go out. You'd go straight to it to check!

I didn't go with anything fancy, work had some foam pad type things with a sticky back that I've stuck on. It's done the job for the past 2 years but literally anything similar will work, I imagine.

The link below is something like what I got for example:

Ahhhh I see what you mean. I was expecting a legit Mazda part :ROFLMAO: .

I love a cheeky bodge/engineered workaround.

Added an important item to the 7 today from @initialDean . Seeing as improving quality of life with an old car is par the course, she now sports a cup holder!

Although I didn't really need to take the seat out but, the wife has gone out for the day, so I whipped it out and had a good poke around. 5 bolts and jobs a good'un.

Came with the rare option of original JDM sweet wrapper.

Cup holder slides onto the runner and the little screw acts a bit like a grub screw, a dab of loctite to hold the thread position and it is pretty solidly in there.

Seat installed and this is the finished article. With trial McD's cup for testing purposes!

Overall not a bad little fit. It strikes a good balance of cup position while leaving the passenger seat able to be used, although it looks like a bit of a faff to get to from the drivers side it really isn't that bad.

But now, one can enjoy a cup of the good stuff while driving.

Ohlins are booked for fitment in a few weeks, excited.
