Hi, my fd arrived without a head unit face but has the actual unit stuck in the slot. I've tried everything to get it out the conventional way even went to Halfords and borrowed every type of key in existence lol. Basically it's not coming out. I was wondering how you remove the tray that sits over the head unit so I can take a look at what's going on. I tried lightly pulling it but don't want to break it if that's not the way to do it.

Cheers

I'm guessing that tray is screwed into the whole surround before its put in. Also you have the later spec dash which is quite sort after so try not to destroy it! And certainly don't let them halfrauds fools try get it out! I would just keep plugging away and try get that stereo out first! I can't remember if you have to take the dash out to get that centre piece off but I believe there's a way you can get the whole of the centre out by taking the gear surround part of the console out and also the dash dome then the heater nobs off and I think it'll come away then but that's mega hassle to do all that!

You could try the stereo keys in the sides, then get some cardboard, lay it on the console under the stereo and try and prise it with a fine screwdriver from the gaps you have under the stereo, there's notches in the cage if you look carefully

I wouldn't in a million years let a halfords tech anywhere near my car haha. I just knew they would have all the keys so went in and asked to borrow them lol. Its a real stubborn bugger I can tell you that. I'll have another go tomorrow on a fresh head I didn't want to lose my temper with it and break something.

What's different about later spec dash? Didn't really think anything of it. I've got a spare one same as that laid outside in the garden at the moment lol.

I've seen a few where they are just stuck/screwed to the stereos cage (really annoying). Have you tried removing the stereo from the cage, then the cage itself. Will atleast give you more room to pry.

Edit I'm an idiot and can't read. The headunit is stuck.... haha maybe just remove the whole panel? Or arm up from near the glovebox and try and put push it out?

Its really stuck in there believe me. I've had a good go at it. I'm going to have another go tomorrow but I fear I may have to start taking dash apart.

You have to take the gauge hood and Speedo surround out to gain access to the screws that hold the centre surround in place and there are 2 screws At the bottom piece and you need to gently pull the hood forward as it's held in place by 3 spring clips but be gentle I took my steering wheel and shroud off also to make it easier then on the centre piece there are 2 screws on the right hand side 2 at the bottom under the gear stick surround and some more spring clips just be gentle and patient and you shouldnt break anything

Yeah you don’t want to break the gauge cluster hood (the dome shaped piece). You’ll pay a pretty penny for one of those second hand 😬

I was really hoping someone was going to come along and say "its simple just remove this screw and out it slides" haha. wishful thinking i know.
I will attempt again tomorrow if i don't succeed guess ill have to start trying to taking it apart. Don't suppose there is anyone local to the north east that knows what they are doing that wants to earn a few quid? I am terrible at fiddly things, i am all but guaranteed to snap something lol.

Isn't the tray above the CD player held in with a screw at the back of it? Can't you take that out?
I'd be doing all I could to get that tray above out before I went trying and breaking all my dome and dash tabs.

I'll be over the moon if it is. Id happily accept looking silly for a east fix. I will check tomorrow.

Early dashes have a shitty rubber coating that rubs off! The later dashes like you have use that hardened plastic for a nicer finish 👍

Have you checked to see if there's not a fastening around the back of the player ?
All the units that I've ever come across have had the option to bolt it in from behind.
If it is you'll never get it out with the release tools !
I would suggest a good torch and get your head in the footwell, you never know.

Can you reach around ;) the back of the head unit from the foot well? I'll be trying all options when I get home from work today.

Ha yeah the tray was a doddle once the knife fight with the head unit was over lol. Was just a case of sliding 1 side down spinning it 90 and pulling it out sideways. I don't mind the tray to be fair it will be going back in. It's handy to have as im sure you know the 7 is very lacking in places to put things. Tomorrow's job is to sort out the hack job someone has done with the wiring. You would be forgiven for thinking Edward scissor hands installed it blind folded. Most of it doesnt even make sense it's like he had a pack of push connectors left over from something and wanted to get his moneys worth.
