I'm a fan of the Carbotech pads, but haven't tried the competition enough to know how they actually compare for my application. I have however, read a huge number of pad reviews and based on the price and my experience have continued to purchase multiple sets.
They are disc kind hot or cold. My fronts crack before they wear out and survive probably 4 sets of pads (off the top of my head). The dust is reasonable to clean off the wheels providing you don't leave it a while after getting wet/hot.
My only gripe is the rear pads can very occasionally groan below about 10mph. Normally fitting the anti squeal plates that come on std pads resolves the issue, but Carbotech do not normally supply these. I’ve just received a couple of sets and the rears were produced using alternative pads as cores for the back plates (Ian was out of stock at the time), so that is an alternative option to get the hardware. I’ve worked with Ian to optimise the rear FD pad size and depth to try to improve the longevity. They are far too small to survive long on track so Ian machines the friction material right up to the edge of the backing plate. This also negates the annoying lip on the disc as the pad uses all the friction surface.
Ian at Carbotech UK has been great to deal with and very amenable to making adjustments based on my feedback. He doesn’t stock FD pads on the shelf, but if you avoid the early season rush the turnaround is normally 1-2 weeks. Most of my trackday buddies run XP10’s. I’ve just ordered one set in the RP2 endurance compound to try.
I’ve got a set of Stoptech pads which I fitted for a 3000 mile thrash around the Alps. In comparison to the XP10’s they were less dusty, but had quite a notable drop in friction. Had to push the pedal quite a bit harder (929MC). Obviously wouldn’t dare use them on track. I started with the XP8’s and shifted to XP10 to improve longevity. Both work fine from cold.
