I have disassembled my front callipers to rebuild them.
The pistons looks in good shape with no obvious scrapes or pits.

They do have a bit of a ring of what looks like baked on seal or some such.
Am I safe to give them a light polish with some diamond paper to get the marks off?

It should come off with some tcut. Just make sure you remove all traces of the cutting compound before reassembly.

I've done 3 or 4 sets of calipers now and every time the piston has needed chaingndue to pitting. Not done the FD ones but they're usually pretty cheap so I normally just change then

We had some 12 micron wet and dry at work so I ended up using that.
I think it was just dried/burnt seal and came right off.

Rebuilding the callipers was strongly satisfying.
