BOV and positioning

Alright, who has a good BOV setup that they are willing to share photos of?

Specifically, on the stock twins. My current setup is pretty rubbish as the BOVs are rubbing up against all sorts of stuff and have caused many issues. Photo below is my setup, you can clearly see why I would want a better BOV, better positioning, tube routing, etc..

Not wanting to delete them at this time.

The one nearest the bulkhead is the actual bov. The forward one is the charge relief for the primary sequential system.

Anyway you can simply run a longer piece of 28mm hose ?? ( something like that) and fit your bov further forward where there is more space.

Me personally id fit the brown oem crv back on and blank the bov. You can then just fit your bov on the ic pipework like most people do.

You will only get loads of vacuum hose problems with it all crammed in there like that not to mention the heat above the turbo pack.

Thanks for the info. Heat is a problem yeah, so far they have made the clutch line leak, they rub the resivour and the strut tower, and they rattle and make all sorts of noise...

I think what you suggested is a good idea, thanks. So move the rear one to the nipple near the throttle body, and swap the front one for a stocker... I think this is similar to what Stu suggested when I had it rebuilt, but I had other stuff to worry about first. Should clear up some space and be generally packaged better.

I just blanked off the rear one for a few years as i liked the turbo chatter on lift off. It certainly didn't do any harm as my twins were still boosting fine when i finally removed them a few years later

Yeah I read you did that on another post here somewhere. I considered it, but my thinking is they are there from factory so I'd be more comfortable keeping at least the stock system. Going to order a stock one tonight and swap it for the front one, whilst I consider my options on the rear one. Ideally I'd want to find a nice sounding, robust, aftermarket BOV that has the same "layout" as the stock one (slim inline, not 90 degree) so I can keep a stock-ish system layout with better noise. Might go all black silicone hose whilst I'm at it.

The crv is the brown one and the oem bov is black. I had a sard r2d2 that was tiny and sounded great in that position.

Best thing you can do is free up as much space there as possible to allow airflow.

oh so they are actually different bits... Seeing as I've got two of the same on right now, is it going to be a problem if I just buy and fit either colour? The only ones I can find are brown, and all listed as BOV.

The colour does not matter, the labels do. Some FD's came with brown for both, others black for the ABV. The rear one connected to the rear section of the y-pipe is the CRV, front one connected to the front section of the y-pipe is the ABV. Stock ones are fine but you can change the ABV if you want to make louder or different whooshing noises :ROFLMAO: .

They should not be swapped around and have different internal springs. The CRV will be labelled as N390 and the ABV (BOV) will be labelled N3A1, often on a pink label but some are black. I wouldn't recommend running an aftermarket CRV but run whatever you like as the ABV.

I also did this and my turbos suffered oil seal failure after a few months. Could just be coincidence or age though.

Got a stock CRV to fit at the weekend. On the topic of relocating the BOV to the throttle elbow - the stock and current ones run back to the filtered airbox. If I move the BOV to the elbow, this obviously wont be an option. Does it have to have a filter on it? I dont really see why as it would only be expelling air I assume. Is it possible it [BOV] could fail open and effectively become an intake, in which case a small filter/gauze might be a good option?

They can leak and act as an intake if they fail but you'd notice pretty quick. It could also expel oil if your turbos or PCV system are dropping any oil into the intake tract which would usually just go into the filter so without a filter this will go into your engine bay, this is the main reason (Along with reducing noise) they are vented back to intake standard.

If you have a catch can and your turbos are healthy I'd say it'll be fine to not run a filter.

Which one is correct? :/ I think I have had them the wrong way around. I replaced the front aftermarket valve with a crv. Behaves fine, but read a different thread and it made me double take... Should I be swapping them around?

Yep go with Tom's advice, it's a long time since i had a twins fd. I do remember quite a few cases of seq problems due to bov/crv confusion

Thanks lads, will get it swapped to the right way around! Already so much space there now. May have lost the choo choo noises but overall its an improvement.
