ABS - fix or replace?

Hi,

There may be a thread on this, but the search engine removes 'ABS' from the query string, so I cannot find one..

I found my ABS is no longer operating, though I have no idea when it failed. I do not recall it triggering in the ten years I have owned the car. I have been told that ABS failure results in poorer brake performance on rx7 due to lower brake pressure (or something like this, I cannot remember) and my braking distance has increased significantly so this seems to hold true. Can anyone verify this please?

I have seen ABS replacement/removal kits has anyone got experience of these, both fitting and running?
Is an ABS fix quite niche i.e. rotary specialist only, or will most performance garages be able to achieve this?

Thanks

If you want to remove it, it is very easy to do. Don’t buy an advertised ‘removal kit’ it’s just some marked up hoses you could get made up for less or you can just use hard lines at a fraction of the cost. One very important thing to remember is the brake bias valve is attached to the abs unit - you need to make sure you keep it as you will need it. The bias valve unbolts so not trouble to remove and reuse either.

If it’s a road car you need to be comfortable that you can still get it through a MOT with the ABS removed. I don’t think it’s a given.

Is there an upgrade to the ABS system that can be done? Like retrofit the ABS unit of a later model etc..

Ive a similar thought in my head as the OP. I've a 94 FD and don't think the ABS works well. Have certainly experienced a slight wheel lock up in the past so I put it down to the ABS system just being too basic rather than broken though

Just bin it. I've had more cars without ABS than with and never had any troubles. If anything I think its ABS is dangerous, I had a brand new hyundai and it just used to release all braking pressure on slipping, nearly died a few times.

Any garage could make you new hardlines, or alternatively measure up and buy flexibles. If you Google it some threads from rx7club might pop up, plenty of info out there

Also great forum name, so true lol
