Ignition upgrade

Hi

Looking for some advice.

I have a dyno session booked for my car in May and I'd like to get the most out of it. My car is a single turbo but running a fully stock ignition system.

I was looking at HKS twin power (cant find one anywhere) or the aem smart coil kits which are a bit pricey. Anyone have any experiences with either, or what alternatives are about. I've seen the D585 coils but all the kits with those seem to be RX8 specific.

I was told that the stock ignition is good for up to 450fwhp but above that an upgrade is sensible...

I don't believe that, without a CDI system, one should go above 500hp.

This is my personal experience and I am not speaking for everyone. However, for any big HP car, CDI system is the only way to have a good spark on boost.

Cheers
Mir

Go for the AEM smart coils over the HKS. There's nothing wrong with the Twin Power but your stock coils are old as fuck now, better to just replace them all.

I do have an MSD CDI leading ignition system that I need to sell, it is pretty complicated to set up however. You very much need to know your way around the FD ignition system.

I have AEM smart coils making over 600, not too pricey all things considered.

Apart from the obvious, plug and lead refresh you can also add an aftermarket earthing kit and either a new O.E igniter or aftermarket one. The HKS Twin Power plugs inline with the factory igniter, but can sometimes be hard to come by, you could purchase one of the alternative JDM direct replacements:

Cusco Ignition Capacitor system (96-98 & 99-00) 16 Bit ECU set ups - This is an alternative to HKS Twin Power
OKADA Projects Plasma Booster - FD3S - Again an alternative to an HKS Twin Power.
R-Magic Power Igniter Type-A - A Direct Replacement Igniter - (all FD3S - I believe)

Hope this helps.

Do you have any wiring diagrams / guide for this that you have used?
Do a search of this forum, or read through Joe Langer's thread as he's probably got one of the best put together loom builds in an FD.

Essentially you do get a wiring diagram with the IGN1As but it's a bit simplistic. There are three earth wires; one needs to go to -12v, one to chassis, one to engine. There are two other wires, one goes to +12v and the other is the trigger wire.

need to make sure the earths are all separate, as jack says can find it on one of my threads, I've done it 3 different ways and only the one way actually works

Could you post a link?

I've seen a fair few threads on rx7club all with differing opinions on how this should be done.

These will work as a suitable alternative for aem ign coils. Direct spark and an individual coil for each plug.

Theyre the same thing, just not branded aem.
