Car stinks at speed

strange one, my car has suddenly began smelling of exhaust fumes (not petrol smell) inside but only with the windows down and at speed...

With windows up I smell nothing

Sitting at idle with windows down it's fine too

What could cause the fumes to enter the cabin only at speed and only when windows are down? Cheers in advance

Fuel pressure opening up a cracked/ split hose under pressure id assume! One thing I do know, there's so much heat from a 13b I wouldn't be chancing driving the car until I found the problem or even replaced all the fuel hose to begin with!
There was a thing where there was a break down on alot of inlets to the secondary rail (i think it was secondary) and you can drill and tap the rail and fit a barbed hose that would fix the fuel leak. This one was the one that caused alot of Yankee cars to catch fire back in the day if I remember correctly

Manifold leak, probably the gasket.

Probably blowing through a grommet been knocked through for the boost gauge or something

Thats good then. Yeah as Neil says, it'll just be a blow in the exhaust system, stick the ac and recirc on and the smell will be gone 😆
I had exactly the same issue in my SA, way back when, it bloody stank !
Windows up all the time or risk contaminating all clothing.
The Fd, when I actually drove it, was okay but the carbed kit car is the same.
I put it down to unburnt fuel, way too rich.

Cheers guys, I'll have a look for obvious exhaust leaks at the flanges, and any missing grommets. If not Ill replace the manifold gaskets and see if that sorts it.

Just been reading about pressure round the back of the car, is it also possible with a bad hatch seal that smell could get pulled in with the vacuum from windows being down?

Nah if you're smelling it, it'll be pulled in from the blowers!

I had the same thing in one of my s13s the other day. Windows down, car stinks, window up car is fine. The rubber around the shifter is split and the down pipe has a blow, (work from previous owner I have to add). Worth taking a look there first.

Iv got no leaks that I can find, but I have got Two large holes the wrong side of the hatch seal, right above the exhaust tip. Iv used some grommets to seal it up as it leads straight into the cabin. Not tested yet as my local shell is out of fuel constantly!

Yeah that could do it, with the windows down it pulling air in where as when the windows are open the cabin is often positively pressured and no smell gets in.
