Hi all, looking for the best route to go down for my 13b gearbox.

I’ll be running roughly 650hp, the car will be used for drifting so needs to be strong.

Looking at all potential options!! Please drop a comment with suggestions/ experience.

Thanks in advance

No experience but I was looking at the T56 gearbox for myself, you can buy them brand new as a universal box rather than car specific, I had read though that they don't like shifting at high rpm.

Rob dahm has one in his three rotor fd.

Sweet man, I’ll have a little look now. The not liking to shift at high rpm doesn’t sound too nice.
What sort of power do stock boxes take?

700ftlbs it says on the description, torque is the killer so if your at 650hp, your torque is probably 450-500ftlbs at a guess so the box will take it and its only around £4000. The high rpm shifting is only what I read, do a bit more research and see what you come up with.

I think quaife or ppg do a gear kit but that's around £3000.

Quaife do a sequential but there 9k there or there abouts. Any other companies out there??
Yes, Quaife is local and it's actually about £10k all in for their 6 speed sequential kit.

Other reputable options are Samsonas and HGT.

Samsonas do a 6 speed sequential or 6 speed H pattern dog box (they also do a 5 speed of each but it isn't worth it).

The 6 speed sequential will also run you a little over £10k while the 6 speed H pattern dog box will run you a little over £7k.

HGT is also a good brand but a box landed here is £17k before you even try to install it and make custom parts.

The alternative is to buy something like a dog gear set and shaft from Liberty transmission (USA) or Albins (Aus) but the overall cost of these solutions is still north of £6k.

Another alternative is an OS Giken gear set and shaft but landed it will cost about £4k.

You can also just run your box, blow it up and rebuild it for £1500-2500 each time it goes.

Stock boxes can take high power for a short amount of time but if you're really going to be drifitng and abusing the box with that power I'd wager it won't last more than a couple events if you're lucky.

The 'Magnum' T56 is probably what you should look at. OEM T56 has bad press for its shift quality. Think that's the only reason Aston Martin robotised it for the Vanquish

Not a rotary, but demonstrates high RPM shifting.

I run a TR6060 (similar to the Magnum), but only rev to 6600rpm. It's not the fastest shifting box in the world(probably a given considering the torque capability), but it is positive to use, especially with an MGW short shift. Had a V160 in a Supra previously and think I prefer the feel of the TR6060.

You might want to consider diff/axle options if not already. Ronin kit with 8.8 Ford is probably the best option.

Ronin also do a transmission mount that spreads the load across the tunnel better than using the lower brace mounts that have been known to tear off.

Hopefully that gives you some ideas.

E92 M3 6 speed manual or 7 speed DCT - The supercharged e92 M3s produce between 625- 650bhp and over 410lb ft and the stock boxes can handle this all day long.

or

The F80 DCT gearbox if you want ultimate peace of mind. Unless. you are running a turbo 20b or 26b... a 13b will not make the torque required to break this box.

Benefit of the DCT box...as fast as a seq box with none of the harsh nvh /whine or maintenance.

To be fair though gavs only just got the dct off the ground with lots of fucking about, not sure how many people are running F80 gearboxes on 13b’s at the minute?

Exactly! 50 quid each and an hour to change over or 4 grand! Umm......i know which one id choose 😝

Yep might be worth calling Ross @ Dragon Performance and getting his opinion on this.

He ran his pink Rx7 and Rx8 drift cars for at least a couple of seasons, also drove his own Ratrod Rusty Rx7 for at least one season in the Open Drift Championship and hammered the hell out of it (lots of aggressive clutch drops and abuse, getting to grips with it, etc).
I don't think any of them were making quite 650hp, but they still had more than enough power with the right pilot to hang with the best drivers and cars in Europe.

I will be soon enough....waiting for car to be mapped before committing to it.
F80 DCT gearbox is the way to go but the e92 m3 dct box will also work...and will truly transform the fd for street and track use.

Think gav ran a maxxecu so not sure if that will work with rotary engines.

But for a link ecu the below dct gearbox ecu will work
