I broke it quickly...And repeatedly...Chaste White Rebuild

Man I bet you’re loving it!! There aren’t many cars on the road that are faster than a 600hp Rx7. Nice when a sub £20k car is faster than other £80k+ cars (I was able to outrun a C63 AMG)

For me personally as good as the M3 is it’s all about the drama of the FD. The uniqueness, the smell, noise etc.

I know they are different cars etc but the new modern M3 despite being fast is quite boring and really for a daily car I just need an old Merc or Volvo for motorway work miles.

Upgraded to a new more powerful starter today.

Also swapped out the old 02 sensor for a new one, the old one was on its last legs.

Next change will be removing the AST and fitting a large air filter.

A few more changes yesterday, decided to open up the screamer rather than leave it plumbed back into the exhaust. It sounds pretty mental but need to use the car more to decide it I prefer it or not.

A mate basically chopped of where it recirculated back into the system and capped it off and then just amended the pipe to act as a screamer pointing down to the flow under their car.

I also deleted the AST as that was in the way of where I’d like to put a big air filter, bought a cap from Essex Rotary for a stupid amount of money.

Just waiting on some 4” straight silicone hose so I can finish sorting the rather large K&N. I have a tight alloy 90 degree to come off the inlet of turbo.

Should look something like this but neater and straighter

After this I need to fix leaky oil return (my fault) and then it’s on to wheels and tyres.

Anyone interested in some Rota MXR 18s, let me know.

Got the tablet up and running, just mocked up a quick gauge selection. Will sort the final set up once I figure out where and how to mount tablet.

Also fitted a large air filter so I can lose the turbo guard.

I’ve been looking at a few vented bonnets from USA or Japan, I might buy one as anything to help under bonnets temps has to be a good thing on these. Depending on IATs I may look into some kind of cold air feed ducting.

It’s not so much the cost of the bonnet but the shipping that takes the piss. I’m negotiating with a company at the moment to see if I can get the shipping cost down.

A few new additions as I needed to remove the manifold due to the wastegate flange needing adapting for v band.

Unfortunately my Greddy Type R gate had been leaking due to a missing fire ring so decided to buy a more modern TS 60mm Powergate and as the manifold is off add a few EGT sensors.

Ive also placed an order for a VIS Scoot style carbon bonnet but likely a 3-4 week wait for that to arrive.

Those are the type of k-type EGT probes to go for too (tapered and enclosed end). Some people use the exposed tip, which are great as they have little mass and respond quickly, but can't handle the sustain temp so can end up going through your turbo..exposed is great for just about everything else though; IAT, Coolant, oil
Tapered is a good compromise between strength and response. At best though EGT probes are a rough average guide to see if things are getting hotter than they were (or silly hot), but the value is an easier way of comparing front-rear rotor temps without paying for and packaging a 2nd wideband lambda.
That's not to say they will read the same when you start though, subtle differences in mounting can read differently ..as I said a rough average guide!
Great for trimming fuel on prop planes during cruise, which is how they were historically used! But still useful data, esp if you build up a picture of what you expect to see then set up failsafes for when it deviates outside of that.

Anyway a new wastegate probably wasn't a bad shout 👍 resolving boost issues is always satisfying, they are so annoying in the first place. Can't wait to hear it scream again. High boost! 😎

A few shots of the manifold and gate.

We started fitting yesterday but had to make a few amendments to get the gate to fit, the body is quite a bit chunkier and shorter than the Greddy gate. The screamer has had to be amended slightly to fit, hoping to have that back today. I’ll get some photos fitted too.

I’ve also purchase a Turbosmart turbo oil restrictor which restricts to 40psi, much more in line with what Holset state.

Awesome what you have done with the car and engine mate. Has got me thinking about a single turbo conversion now 😈

New gate and screamer fitted, it’s incredibly tight but just about fits.

I also rewrapped the down pipe as well as the manifold with a better quality wrap from Merlin Motorsport, supposedly good for 1000c and made of Basalt. Also used some heat resistant tape on the lower inlet, doubt it will do much but anything has to be worth a try.

This shitty cheap eBay turbo blanket has seen better days, literally disintegrating in my hand after very few miles. A company called Funk Motorsport make some bold claims about their blankets so have one on order.

Tomorrow’s job is to get the exhaust/turbo v band to line up a little better followed by fixing the intercooler in place properly.

Haven’t done too much on the car this last week, had my tonsils removed last Wednesday so spent the last week feeling sorry for myself popping pills.

I’ve been making plans and purchases though. On inspection my front mount intercooler which strangely was hanging on with cable ties had seen better days, not a bad size core at 600x280x76mm, looks just to be a Chinese copy of a Greddy front mount. I also found a sizeable boost leak with a split boost hose.

I decided to do a straight swap with the same eBay cooler but unfortunately I had three yes three damaged on arrival, not only are the couriers fucking useless but the Chinese factory are incapable of safely packaging their products. So I’ve managed to source a 5inch core which I’m going to modify to fit, should be with me soon.

I fitted the other bucket seat, it’s a tight fit.

I purchased a few more things for heat protection. The silver heat temp we used literally fell straight off so bought some gold wrap. Also purchased a Funk Motorsport turbo blanket, they claim they are much better than the usual Chinese eBay shit but likely the same with a badge attached, I’ll test it and see, not holding my breath.

I’ve bought a few things from Link to add EGTs, Knock and my AEM AFR gauge to the ECU. My mate who is an auto electrician for Omex is coming over next week to sort for me.

I also bought a double din blank from Advocult so I could use high strength Velcro to secure my in car tablet plus a cigarette lighter charger. Looks quite neat and can just about reach heater controls and hazards.

3715CA9F-0716-49DE-A3F9-650F053A9F76.jpeg

The final thing I’m waiting on is my down pipe to be amended, as the new gate is slightly more chunky it means the downpipe doesn’t seal correctly at the turbo end so adding a flexi to allow a bit of movement, just waiting for a fabricator to sort for me.

New mapping date is 19th October, hoping to make a bit more than 600hp this time but different rollers so may of course vary.

Love the updates, gonna be ridiculous when it's done, out of interest what will the diff and gearbox think about 600bhp+ will they be quite happy at that level or do you have to do anything?

Also I'll be doing a Link at some point, what's the deal with the one you have, can you just keep adding sensors etc as you please and they just work straight away? How you getting on with it as a package, have you used any of the boost limiting per gear stuff yet?

Car's looking awesome man.

To be honest I’m not entirely sure regarding diff and box. It’ll just be something that I address if and when I need to. In my mind at least as the power is so linear and the fact the peak power is over 7000 I think that’ll help the drivetrain somewhat.

Also usually it’s torque that kills gearboxes etc and as we all know rotaries aren’t that torquey. I think peak torque was about 420lb ft around 7300rpm (from memory) but yes if it breaks I’ll sort it for something more suitable.

No I haven’t used any of the more advanced features of the ECU yet, I doubt I’ll need to use boost by gear with my setup.

I am impressed with the ECU though, it’s good value for money and plenty of features for my needs. Im actually getting my head around adding more sensors at the moment, seems easy enough. You can buy an expansion model for more inputs.

PC Link software is good, still learning but it’s intuitive and I have to say their tech support is superb.

After numerous failed attempts at getting a Chinese intercooler delivered to me in one piece I decided to take a punt on an Minotaur 5” thick core intercooler that I can modify to work as a front mount.

I offered it up yesterday and I think with a bit of fettling and changing the end tanks to be on the front rather than the bottom it should just work.

I also got the Funk motorsport turbo blanket on, not sure it looks any different to the Chinese ones.
