Brake duct test invite

I have opened this thread to propose to anyone with FD's that have the OEM lip spoilers installed on their front bumpers who would be willing to have newly developed brake ducts to test for compatibility and fitment purposes? They are straightforward designs produced by an American acquaintance that have an OEM lip matching inlet leading to a 3 inch bore for pipe ducting and finished in ABS white plastic. I have test versions for both pre 99, and 99 spec designs, and will be ideal to complete a closed pipe duct system to cool the front brake rotors (a great compliment to Craig's TGS brake duct plate cover). If you have potential plans to install a new ducting system on your brakes, and at the same time have the stock lip spoiler installed on your car, feel free to contact me on this thread to make arrangements at an appropriate date.

Please refer to some pictures disclosed below for what they look like as a set -

The smoother less contoured design is for the 99 spec version, whilst the the set with curving outlets is for the pre 99 spec. My hope is that once proof of fitment can be confirmed and documented, that I could arrange a group buy for them should we have members here who want to order a set. I would then set this up in the appropriate section once I can successfully get to that stage.

Well I do have a set of Craig's backing plates to go on and my car has an early spec bumper...so yeah I would be interested in a set of these ducts. Can't help you with a test fit until my car gets liberated from its never ending stay at Hayward's though. ?

I know the feeling of having it on hold, hence I cannot test the pre 99 spec on mine either.

In the meantime I will enquire if any brackets need to be made up to mount them up and if so I will provide an update on this aspect as well for everyone.

My cars sat doing nothing with a standard early spec bumper & lip combo, I could give it a try if needed. I won’t be driving it any where for a while though.

Hi there, I would only need the time and availability of your car to test fit the placement of the duct so it won't need to be on the move. Perhaps some jacks to lift the fronts would be useful should you be interested. ;)

Something like this would be great........

. a great compliment to Craig's TGS brake duct plate cover

How have i never seen these before...........

My car has a 99 spec bumper, as I have now seen these and craigs duct cover, happy to help, i may just send to TGS for him to do a ducting solution, would that work?

Craig being willing to install his duct plates and do piping of course....

Regards Neil

Looking forward to seeing this progress. This could be the missing piece to me actually getting my ducting finished. Happy to help however possible. 99 car with stock bumper/splitter, without undertray or brake duct trays. 25 row oil cooler probably sits a little lower than stock.

Be interested to know how they mount to the car?

Hi Neil,
I am happy to post the 99 spec samples over to you if you want Craig to test it out? Would appreciate some photos to show any fitment issues if that is okay with you.

Update for the pre-99 spec ducts
Nigel (Spendyrx) kindly let me test fit the old style brake ducts this morning as he was local to me and had his FD up on the ramp. This gave me the opportunity to look at the fitment of the duct directly behind the lip and identify issues present, in relation to the oil cooler lines and the brake duct tray. We also had a play round to determine how these would mount up which I think would be the same for 99 spec versions, which I will explain further with the images below.

The inlet of the duct from behind the lip spoiler sits flush on the old spec design, which is a positive thing because if it were to slot within the lip spoiler duct mould, the inlet would have to be designed smaller which isn't ideal. The high pressure air feed will travel comfortably through the 3 inch bore towards the piping as you can see from the picture above.

The one main issue with this prototype design is the raised ridge where the duct transitions into the 3 inch bore extension as it is too tall and interferes with the duct sitting flush in relation to the oil cooler / brake duct tray. A solution to this would be to redesign the raised ridge to be a gentler sloping angle so that the duct sits more upright.

Same issue above without the tray the raised ridge interferes with the oil cooler lines.

Should you have the stock brake duct tray on your car, what we thought of doing to mount these is to first replace the stock brake duct piece that is clipped onto the overall tray as seen above. The duct will essentially replace this stock part that can then be cable tied to the tray by drilling two M6-M8 holes onto the tray, using the widest point of the duct below the tray as a reference. This would allow the duct and the tray to be tied together as one piece before finally installing onto the car. I couldn't test this solution directly onto the car in question, but have some reference pictures below to show how it mounts should they be tied together.

Without the trays, I reckon a custom mounting bracket should be made to fit around the bottom of the duct and bolted to a suitable location around the oil cooler or wheel arch area. A test fit with a full duct solution and all the parts required should indicate where and how the duct would fit perfectly.

Let me know later in the week when I can come over again to with a measuring tape to measure out how much longer the duct needs to be so the 3 inch section clears the under tray surface? I spoke to my mate about the test and he quickly modified the 3D model so the slope from the duct is shallower than the old one. Have a look below to see what I mean:

I said to him it would be ideal if the top surface of the duct could be profiled and lengthened so that it matches with the duct tray as follows -

Either tonight or tomorrow night after 5pm would be best. If not I'm free from 5 til 6 Thursday as I got kickboxing at half 6! Weds is chicky dins down mam n dads and Friday I gotta take ellie kickboxing lol. I'm hoping to either pull the seat tonight or tomorrow night ?

Hi, the new ones have arrived in the UK so there'll be updates soon. I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm an Old racer that is still interested in helping people go faster without spending a ton of money doing it (there's plenty of them already). Cooling brakes makes a lot of sense and confidence helps a ton too. I hope this last version will do the trick. Thanks! rz Looking at the pics, there is a Mazda connection. The Sports Races have 13Bs. Cheers!
