Hi guys I’m looking to overhaul my box as 5th gear crunches and 2nd is not great. Where’s the best place to buy parts from?

Are you swapping your 5th while the box is apart? I fitted the US/UK .719 5th in mine and it's great on cruise. Wasn't too expensive for the gear and matching counter gear from Mazda

Bearings wise I went with some expensive supposedly uprated long life ones from a local gearbox specialist. Most places should be able to help if you give them your old bearings.

The syncros I got from Mazda and they were pretty cheap. Going from memory £15-20 ea.

Next year it’s having launch control and I don’t see the point spending a couple of grand swapping boxes if it’ll cost me a couple hundred quid to change bearings/synchros.
I was struggling to find the parts for it online but didn’t think about trying mazda themselves as every time I’ve wanted parts they have been useless

Corby are pretty good but it always helps if you have part numbers

@Ceylon isn't it true the synchros in the 99+ cars and RX-8 192 box are improved and interchangable?

Some were changed, the 5th gear one was revised and if I remember right also the 3rd gear syncro. They are all interchangeable though yes.

I ordered all my parts through Amayama. That was 3 or so years ago now though so there may be better options now.

The FD box is quite nice to work on. Did all the bearings, syncros and 5th gear swap in an evening after work and that included making a few parts like long puller arms etc. so it's not too bad at all.

Visited Mazda in Corby, didn’t really want to help as it is an import and he reckons all the parts are different! Anyhow he’s checking for the parts tomorrow and is giving me a call. If he can’t help I’ll get all the part numbers I need and try again

I used to find you really needed to find a dealer that was willing to go on the system to find the parts. I had to travel 20 miles down the road to get spares.

At least the FD is still on the system, with the FB they had to email Japan and somebody looked at the microfiche and then relayed back the part number.

You could have a look on RHDjapan for part numbers, they do quite a few OEM parts.

If you get the part numbers they should be able to sort it.

However if you don't know the part numbers they have to go on the "old" (which is probably now very old) system. But most staff members would have started long after that system was retired so they prob don't know or can't get on it.

If you persist they will help

Mazda have got back to me, 1st/2nd gear synchro, 5th gear synchro and gear they can get. But will set me back nearly £1k with vat. Think I’ll pass lol

Err, use Amayama or give Mazda the part numbers. There are many EPC's available online to look them up.

Just looked these up for you to check prices on Amayama, doesn't seem too bad.

5th gear synco - £13.20 - W50117725C
2nd gear syncro - £42.46 - R5051726Y
1st gear syncro - £19.78 - R51417265B
3rd gear synco - £64.31 - R5061726Y
4th gear synco - £13.96 - M50217265C
Reverse gear - £13.36 - R50317265B

£167.07 for a full set of syncros (Plus postage and duty obviously).

It's always best if you look up the part numbers and either email Mazda UK with a list or use a service like Amayama.

Thanks for the help guys. One last thing, looking through the parts pages it doesn’t say 5th gear, i found a gear called gear, over top is it that?

How about the gears? I may buy the synchros and some new gears/bearings and then buy a beefed up main shaft from Liberty or OS Giken.

Yes that's 5th, you'll also need the matching counter gear if changing ratio.

They're all there too. I'd open up the box first to check, you'll likely find the gears are as new inside, mine were.
