255bhp and 280bhp

Hi, does anyone know what the difference between the S6 255bhp and 280bhp engines is? Is there any mechanical differences or was it software? Ie a different ecu number etc? Just wondering if there's a fairly easy/cheap way to gain 25bhp.

280 ps cars were the 99-02 Type R, Type R Bathurst, Type R Bathurst R, RS, RZ and spirit R type A and B. They had the N3G1 turbos (later spec turbos) and ECU to suit.

255 ps cars had earlier spec turbos and ECU to suit.

Apparently the 280ps cars had a slightly different back box but I doubt it makes much difference at all

There’s no difference in the blocks and you could probably get a 255ps car up to 280 just with some basic breathing mods and a remap

Thanks, I always thought that the earlier type R and RZ cars were also 280bhp?

No mate only the 99+ ng31 equipped cars were 280 from the factory.

A mapped ecu and free flowing exhaust will net you 300bhp anyway.
