Hey guys !

Im going single and before i spend all my money on parts i just wanted to get opinions on the bits i have chosen to use and whether im wasting cash on these items and should buy something else instead.

So i have so far ... (my car is a 96' has stock ports and currently a PFC)
Greddy T78-29D turbo (a bit bigger than i wanted but heyho)
Manifold
V mount
Full Function Engineering secondary rail
Greddy 50mm wastegate.
Greddy Intake

So in various baskets online i have ready to purchase...
Competition Clutch Stage 3
Pilot bearing and rear seal.
1650cc Bosch EV14 injectors 34mm (may need some tophats as im sure previous owner of the fuel rail used 48mm injectors)
Turbosmart FPR1200
Walbro GST450 fuel pump.
Parts to make a DP.
And then the obvious fittings i need to get this lot connected and working.

Im also considering going to a Link G4+ ecu.

Am i missing anything obvious or buying the wrong parts?

Thanks all in advance.

FOLOWING!

What are your power goals and what's the car being made for (fast street car, do you track etc)?

400-450whp i guess. This turbo will tie me over until i can afford a new BW EFR 8374. I mainly use it on street but have done the odd track day and would do some more, but need better brakes first. Found my pads fading out quickly.

Bit late now innit if the turbo is already fitted?

And yeah looks like you just need ancillaries now

I just removed the twin turbo stuff, and threw the mani and turbo in position for a picture. Once im sure im ordering the right stuff i can get to installing it all then. :)

With a stock port engine which I assume has not been built or studded?....this will be your biggest restriction. You will safely make around 400 bhp at the flywheel "safely".

400 or 450 wheel horsepower is not realistic or reliable on a stock port engine. You are better off taking this engine apart and rebuilding it as a large street port or half bridge or full bridge port and ensuring its studded and balanced to safely rev over 8000 rpm and built to handle more than 1 bar of boost.

On a stock port engine the max boost you want to run is about 1 bar with some wmi to prevent knock and det etc...if you want to run above 1 bar boost the limiting factor will the size of the stock ports. Also that T78 turbo is far too big for a stock port engine, It will be a lag monster with not much top end power as you'll be restricted by your engine.

Best bang for buck is to sell off the T78 turbo and get a cheap TO4S turbo which will make 400bhp at the flywheel at 0.8 -0.9 bar off boost and you will have a fun single turbo car to enjoy instead of a lag monster with no mid range and a very limited top end!

The rest of your mod list looks fine. The link ECU is def worth a closer look too....but the bottom line is your stock port engine and the Big T78 single turbo is a very very poor match.

i was afraid i was going to see this reply ! But it does make sense. Just finding or coming across the turbos for sale. Never really see them.

Not this 1 bar on stock ports pish again!!!

I ran my twins at 1.2 bar for years and years in track without any problem. I ran my single at 1.25bar also without any problems.

Richie tbh on that turbo its gonna be laggy and porting will help spool the turbo. That said if you can put up with it then id expect 450bhp at 1bar done very comfortably.

That all said copyninja is indeed correct that the large turbo doesn't suit standard ports. It will take an age to get to peak boost but it will get there, just around 5k.

A smaller turbo suits standard ports much better

I think you have everything you need, the fixings and fittings quickly add up.

Get everything fitted and drive it off boost to your tuner, or what i did was fit everything except the fuelling. That way you can literally jump in and drive it without having to adjust for the increased fueling. Your tuner will take an hour or 2 to fit the fueling and set everything up for you.

Me personally i liked the pfc and wouldn't change it just because, but it's old hat and the modern link is undoubtedly better but the pfc also does the job just fine.

My 2p anyway

i knew the turbo was going to be big but it wasn't until it arrived I realized how big. Bit of an impulse purchase  live and learn i guess. Ideally i did want something smaller that i could run the engine as it is, as compression etc is good and current budget doesn't factor in rebuild. Then when i had alot more cash to burn get the engine built for safe power and ported and go for a bigger turbo.

Thats a good idea actually. Hadnt thought of keeping the fueling as is till getting to tuners. I did wonder if was able to change the injectors sizing and scaling myself from the commander, but haven't researched that far ahead yet.

I think from memory i just need to tell the pfc to run on single turbo or without sequential?

Obvious tuners are Stu at rotor torque i guess.

Thanks for the 2p! turned out very valuable!

Well that's what i did, Stu and Jay fit the injectors etc really quick then did the mapping after.

You could always keep your eye open for a gt35/to4s/s362 or similar. Sell your dustbin lid to cover the costs. Better done now before you (or stu) fab a downpipe.

I would hate for you to spend all this time and money and end up with a car you don't like or a car that will only be a bit faster than the oem setup.

Your stock ports engine will easily achieve between 300-350 whp with a good level of safety and reliability and If you read my other thread about the Dragy GPS acceleration of my rx7 which made around 340whp or approx 390bhp at the flywheel at only 0.7bar boost. You can see it is a lot faster in acceleration compared to an oem 2002 spirit r on stock twins from 60-100 mph, 60-130mph and 100-200kph.

I see no reason why you cant achieve similar results by going for a slightly smaller turbo like TO4S, BW 362SXE, or big money turbo like efr 8374 which will compliment and work well with your engine and keeping your max revs to 7000 rpm to maximize your reliability.

I agree my advice is certainly on the conservative side as I dont want rich to have any issues with his engine etc. However I'm sure stu and jay will sort him out as ultimately they are tuning the car but looks like he is in good hands.

Havent touched base with either Stu or Jay yet. On my now longer to do list, but for sure they are my number 1 choice. Guess covid may/will make getting the car tuned harder than it needs to be.

You will also gain a lot more torque a lot earlier in the rpm range if you get a smaller turbo.

I was getting peak torque around 4k and full boost by 2.5k on a small single.

It all comes down to what are your future goals? If your gonna be content with 350-400whp then a small single is the way to go.

Haha i remember the feeling, mine was really small, like to4e sized on a t3 frame. Any of the t4 smaller turbos will be ideal, that s300sx would be my pick of the bunch

I’m thinking this one in this trim.. S300sx

Unless any of the other trims would be better suited....
